Iron Man 3 picked up the story where the original iron man film left off. Tony Stark, (played by Robert Downey Jr.) billionaire arms industrialist, has developed the outer exoskeleton suit of a robot to complement technology married with the power of the human brain. Gwyneth Paltrow returns as Pepper Potts, his brainy but cute assistant who disapproves of most of the tomfoolery but supports him at all times. Scarlett Johanssen, playing legal eagle Natalie, joined the fray as a part time superhero on the side.
Stark has become identified as the “Iron Man”, a superhero and playboy figure whose true identity the media displays. In Iron Man 2, Mickey Roarke, (surely a flash forward to Downey’s own future), as Ivan Venko, who wants revenge. The whiplash effect of a superhero going public unmistakable. Don Cheadle replaced Terrence Howard in the War Machine/ Colonel Rhodes storyline, which will develop more in Iron Man 3.
Roarke, capitalizing on his comeback success, notably played Iron Man’s enemy, and had a wickedly electronic way with the whip. The man who assisted Stark’s father to develop the exoskeleton technology, Anton Venko, is dying, and the splashy display of the man who has it all angers his surviving son. Stark suddenly has his hands full with an angry Russian with volcanic anger and “iron man” weaponry, while the military and the government try to wrestle his technology away.
